Jury awards $525K to N.J. man who had teeth knocked out at county jail

Kavan Costello, now 23, of Ocean Township, was arrested Feb. 17, 2020, when police found a handgun and Xanax in a vehicle in which Costello was a passenger, according to court papers. After arriving at the jail, Costello said four officers attacked him, knocking out two of his front teeth. Costello also suffered a black eye, con cussion, and "marks and bruises all over," his attorney, Brooke Barnett, of Newark, said Tuesday. Jailers dressed Costello in a pink jumpsuit, taunted him, and held him in an unheated cell for three days, according to his lawsuit, filed in state court on Aug. 5, 2021. North to Shore 2025 will run from June 14 through June 29 and take place in Atlantic City, Asbury Park and Newark.
